Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

Dr Elisabeth Schwarzhaupt (1901–1986) was one of the most important pioneers of gender equality for women in Germany. After completing her law studies, she became actively involved in advocating for women’s rights as early as the 1930s and, in 1945, was appointed the first Senior Church Councillor (Oberkirchenrätin). As a CDU politician, she demonstrated considerable courage in 1957 when she voted in favour of the Equal Rights Act against the position of her own parliamentary group. In 1961, she became Germany’s first Federal Minister, championing reforms in public health as well as environmental and consumer protection. Although she herself once described her role as that of a "token woman", she paved the way for women to enter senior political offices. Her courage, perseverance, and strong sense of justice continue to make her a role model to this day.
