Description Coin
This coin was designed by Anna Steinmann and deliberately forgoes a portrait. The obverse features a coiled amber necklace as its central motif - an intimate keepsake that Margot Friedländer received from her mother and carried with her throughout her life. The seemingly casually placed necklace is accompanied by the quotation "LOOK AT WHAT CONNECTS YOU". At the centre of the coin are the dates of her life, 1921–2025, while the name MARGOT FRIEDLÄNDER is arranged along the upper edge. In the lower section, a series of dots completes the design, forming a harmonious circular composition. The motif conveys one of Margot Friedländer’s key messages in a subtle yet powerful way and creates a striking emotional closeness - even without a portrait.
Backgroundinformation
Backgroundinformation
Margot Friedländer is a German‑Jewish Holocaust survivor, contemporary witness, and author. In 1944, she was deported to Theresienstadt after her mother and brother had previously been arrested by the Gestapo and murdered. Following liberation, she lived for many decades in the United States before returning permanently to Berlin in 2010. Through her recollections - most notably in her book Try to Make Your Life (Versuche, dein Leben zu machen) - she offered generations profound insight into life before, during, and after persecution. Well into old age, she travelled to schools, memorial events, and public discussions to counteract forgetting. Margot Friedländer is regarded as one of the most important voices of remembrance culture in Germany.
