Description Coin

Description Coin

The obverse of the coin, designed by Bodo Broschat (Berlin), with its symmetrical composition reminiscent of a votive panel, depicts the famous Nativity scene: Mary and Joseph are seated on choir stalls, while the infant Jesus lies in the manger. The composition combines historical and biblical references and, with its Alpine panorama and the church tower of Oberndorf, points to the place where the song “Silent Night, Holy Night” originated. The globe and the angel symbolize peace, internationality, and the musical message.

Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

“Silent Night, Holy Night” is one of the best-known and most frequently sung Christmas carols in the world. It originated in 1818 in Oberndorf near Salzburg, Austria. The lyrics were written by the assistant priest Joseph Mohr, and the melody was composed by the teacher and organist Franz Xaver Gruber. Originally written for voice and guitar, the song quickly spread across Europe and was disseminated worldwide during the 19th century. With its simple melody and its message of peace, comfort, and divine presence, it resonates with people across denominational and cultural boundaries. In 2011, “Silent Night” was added to Austria’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage. Today, the song is an integral part of Christmas traditions, a symbol of quiet reflection, and an expression of a longing for harmony that connects generations and has lost none of its impact to this day.
