Description Coin

Description Coin

Given the central importance of this court for Germany's democratic constitution, it is hardly surprising that it was chosen as the motif for the "Law" coin. It forms the foundation of the German rule of law and is therefore truly a "pillar of democracy". The artist Bastian Prillwitz, who designed all three sides of the series, depicts the courthouse in the centre of the coin. To the left of it, he positioned a constitutional judge in his characteristic robe. According to Prillwitz, the judges bring the building to life and therefore also deserve a prominent position on the coin. The leitmotif "Law" is immortalised in capital letters below the image.

Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

The "Unity" coin kicked things off last year. In 2021, it will be replaced by the motif "Law".

The city of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg is home to Germany's most important judicial institution: the Federal Constitutional Court. It is the highest independent instance of the judiciary and acts as the guardian of the German constitution. Its decisions are binding on the constitutional bodies of the federal and state governments as well as all courts and authorities. Every German citizen has the opportunity to submit constitutional complaints here. The judges of the Federal Constitutional Court are renowned personalities whose term of office is 12 years. They are instantly recognisable by their venerable scarlet robes.
