Whether heavy rain disasters, vegetation fires, snow chaos, storm surges or hurricanes: the fire service is in action everywhere. While emergencies such as house fires, road accidents or triggered smoke alarms are almost commonplace, civil protection operations require special dedication. Fire brigades form the backbone of this civil defence system. In federal Germany, they provide rapid assistance to any location, work together constructively in a spirit of partnership and contribute their expertise as incident commanders in municipalities, districts and federal states. The comprehensive emergency response provided by the fire services is unique in this form and size. It is supported by a community of people who work on a full-time and voluntary basis, both in public and private organisations. In total, over 1.3 million people are active in fire services. These include volunteer fire brigades, professional fire brigades, company fire brigades and youth fire brigades. Important for every operation: people and equipment. Well-trained, available personnel are just as important as modern, functional vehicles and equipment. The environment also plays its part. Volunteers, for example, are released from work by their employers for deployment, and their families have to accept the additional burden.
