    Oriole 20 euro gold coin

To mark 500 years since the Reformation, the Federal Republic of Germany is issuing a 50 euro gold coin for the first time.
This means collectors can experience a true premiere in May. The coin is an innovation in terms of the coin weight and nominal value, which have not been used before in Germany. The first 50 euro gold coin will feature a “Luther rose” motif.

The Luther rose is one of the most famous symbols of the Evangelical Lutheran church. Elector Johann Friedrich I gave Luther a signet ring featuring this rose in 1530 at the Veste Coburg. In the center of the flower there is a cross surrounded by a heart. The coin was designed by artist Adelheid Fuss from Geltow. “The Luther rose is shown on this coin as an important symbol of Martin Luther’s theology and therefore the importance of the Reformation,” said the jury, explaining the reason behind its decision. The image side depicts elements of the Luther rose in an extraordinarily sensitively and carefully designed combination.

The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the year 2017, the twelve stars of Europe as well as – depending on the mint – the mint mark “A” (Berlin), “D” (Munich), “F” (Stuttgart), “G” (Karlsruhe) or “J” (Hamburg).

The year of Luther will be marked throughout Germany in 2017. Reformation Day will also be marked as a national holiday on October 31, 2017, for one year only.

The order period for gold coins from 2017 has already expired.
