100 Years of Votes for Women
On January 19, 1919, women in Germany were allowed to exercise their right to vote at national level in the German federal elections.
The image side depicts a group of women running toward the observer, as if in a protest march. The enforcement of the right to vote was thanks to many committed personalities. Therefore, the coin does not show a protest march in any specific historic situation, but a group of women from different times, who have fought until today for equal participation in political processes. The coin commemorates both the democratic achievement of the women’s right to vote in 1919 and the dynamic that began already in 1908 with the annulment of the law of associations, which prevented women from political involvement. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “D” for the Bavarian State Mint, Munich (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt, München), the year 2019 and the twelve stars of Europe. Through this variety of content, the coin presents a world of experience in miniature, which guides the observer through 100 years of Bauhaus. The Brave Little Tailor from the Grimm’s Fairy Tales series
This coin is the eighth to be issued as part of the “200 Years of Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series started in 2012. The first collection of Children’s and Household Tales by the Brothers Grimm was published on December 20, 1812, and has been part of the UNESCO Memory of the World Program since 2005.
The image side depicts the brave little tailor from the perspective of the end of the story. The figure wears both the attributes of his original craft as well as the crown, as a symbol of the position he achieved as a ruler. The defeated flies, which originally triggered the action, lie at the little tailor’s feet along with the palace. The figure and the palace are portrayed in great simplicity and clarity. The illustration does not lose itself in the individual elements of the fairy tale nor in traditional subjects. At the center of the image side is a section of the flag introduced through the Weimar Constitution, which is the first motif element on a silver coin of the Federal Republic of Germany to be shown in color. The color is not simply decoration, but also an expression of the decisions made for the Republic and for democracy, symbolized by the imperial colors. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “A” for the Berlin State Mint (Staatliche Münze Berlin), the year 2019 and the twelve stars of Europe.
