  • Running Machine by Karl Drais 1817

Running Machine by Karl Drais 1817

The successful vivid design depicts Karl Drais’ running machine in use by a draisine rider. The motif represents the invention as a saddle set in its historical context: Tambora volcano eruption (Indonesia) with climate disaster, failed harvests and horse sickness.

The silhouette of the volcano and the realistic grassed area produce elements that give the coin image a horizontal structure. The typography blends sensitively into the overall design. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “G” for the State Mints of Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe mint (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Prägestätte Karlsruhe), the year 2017 and the twelve stars of Europe. • 300th Birthday of Johann Joachim Winckelmann

300th Birthday of Johann Joachim Winckelmann

The portrait depicts Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the founder of classical archeology and art history, in profile, following the example of many ancient coins.

Thus, his attitude flows into the artistic design of the coin.
