125th Birthday of Nelly Sachs
The expressive artistic design convincingly focuses on one of the central themes of the works of the German-Jewish poet and Nobel Prize winner Nelly Sachs:
The poem “Kommt einer von Ferne” (If someone comes from far away), to which the coin refers, analyzes the Holocaust, with exodus and persecution, and is therefore, at the same time, very topical. The jury praised the memorable, internationally comprehensibly symbolism in the unusual design, which describes violence and freedom and invites the observer to analyze the subject and the oeuvre of Nelly Sachs. 200th Birthday of Ernst Litfaß
The coin acknowledges Ernst Theodor Amandus Litfaß (1816 – 1874), a printing plant owner and publisher, famous in particular for the invention of the advertising pillar.
The stylized male person is reminiscent of the traditional images of Ernst Litfaß, but could also represent a citizen using the advertising pillar invented by Litfaß as a source of information. The use of the typography, which oscillates around the motif on the image side in a semi-circle, is also very successful. On the value side, the center of the coin is incorporated in the text, but rather as a severe, self-contained design element. The use of simple form elements continues in the figure of the eagle, which appears effortless, vibrant and dignified.” The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “D” for the Bavarian State Mint, Munich (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt, München), the year 2016 and the twelve stars of Europe. 175 Years of German National Anthem
The coin marks 175 years since the song was written. The third verse of the Song of the Germans combines the desire for national unity with the longing for justice and freedom. It is also the national anthem of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The coin is characterized by the high formal relationship between the image and value sides and communicates a harmonious overall impression. There is also a balanced relationship between the figure and the coin field. The typography of the text extract “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit” (Unity and Justice and Freedom) from the national anthem on the image side corresponds with the graphical design of the value. The portrait and eagle illustration are particularly vivid due to the delicate relief illustration. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “J” for the Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze), the year 2016 and the twelve stars of Europe. 125th Birthday of Otto Dix
The coin honors Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix (1891 – 1969), one of the greatest German painters and graphic designers of the 20th century.
The relief on the image side combines, in a perfect collage, a portrait, an artistic reference to one of his main motifs, and his signature. The result is a composition that, to a certain extent, reflects Dix’s installation principle and the virulence of his early work in a new artistic language. The graphic severity of the value side initially appears to be in contrast to the image side. On closer inspection, however, successful parallels can be drawn from the two-dimensional design, the typography and the individual graphical elements. The German eagle is presented as a dignified form.” The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the denomination and value designation, the mint mark “G” for the State Mints of Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe mint (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Prägestätte Karlsruhe), the year 2016 and the twelve stars of Europe.
