  • “Economic and Monetary Union” 2 euro collector coins set 2009

On January 1, 2009 an additional 2 euro commemorative coin was issued. Ten years on from the foundation of the EMU, Europe is celebrating this historic event with a joint 2 euro commemorative coin. It is the second 2 euro commemorative coin to be issued with the same motif in all euro Member States. The citizens of Europe selected the design on the image side via an online poll, in a procedure decided on by the European Commission. The winning design was submitted by George Stamatopoulos, a sculptor employed by the Greek Central Bank, who also designed the euro circulation coins for his home country. Only the spelling of the reason for issuing the coin and the issuing country (in the respective national language) differs on the image side of the coins from the national euro countries.

The German coins will be minted by all five German mints. A copy in the exclusive “mint gloss" collectible quality from each mint is available in the new “10th Anniversary of the Economic and Monetary Union” 2 euro collector coins set, which is being offered by the Official Sales Agency for Collector Coins of the Federal Republic of Germany (VfS) to mark this anniversary. • “50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome” 2 euro collector coins set

The signing of the Treaty of Rome in 1957 by the six founding states, including Germany, represented more than the foundation of an economic community. Rather, the treaty laid the foundations for an ever closer union between the peoples of Europe. It was the basis for today’s European Union (EU), which now has 27 Member States. For the first time, on the 50th anniversary of the Treaty, all 13 euro countries issued a 2 euro commemorative coin with the same motif. The coin motif depicts the treaty, bound as a book, with the signatures of the six founding members against the backdrop of the pavement of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, designed by Michelangelo.

The “50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome” 2 euro collector coins set includes all five 2 euro commemorative coins (one each from the mints in Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G) and Hamburg (J)) in mint gloss condition.
