10 euro silver commemorative coins 2010

In 2010, six Sterling silver (925/1000) 10 euro commemorative coins will be issued.

  • 200th Birthday of Robert Schumann

The coin was designed by Prof. Christian Höpfner from Berlin. The image side depicts a likeness of Schumann, which was already very well-known during Schumann’s lifetime. The relief portrait by Schumann’s friend Rietschel was created in 1846 in Dresden, Germany and depicts the 36-year-old Schumann in profile. The circumscription in contemporary clear font is in sharp contrast to the classical portrait.

The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2010. Together with the uniform arrangement of the circumscription
“10 EURO BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 2010” (10 EURO FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY 2010)
and the mint mark J (Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze)) above the eagle’s head, it forms an impressive counterpart to the image side.

The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription:
“TÖNE SIND HÖHERE WORTE” (NOTES ARE SUPERIOR WORDS)
(a statement by Schumann, written in his diary from 1828). Like previous German 10 euro commemorative coins, this coin is to be made from 18 g “Sterling silver”. It is planned to have the commemorative coin minted in brilliant uncirculated and mint gloss quality by the Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze) and to issue it in May 2010 together with a commemorative stamp on the same theme.

  • 100th Birthday of Konrad Zuse

The coin was designed by the artist Heinz Hoyer from Berlin. The center of the image side features a square with the groundbreaking binary computer language, partly overlaid with a stylized profile of Zuse. This combination, in conjunction with the punched tape illustrated at the top of the coin and, along the sides, the designations Z1 to Z64 of the devices built by Zuse, does full justice to Zuse’s achievements, which are still relevant today. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2010 and the mint mark “G” (State Mints of Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe mint (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Prägestätte Karlsruhe)). The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “KONRAD ZUSE – VISIONÄR ZWISCHEN NULL UND EINS” (KONRAD ZUSE – VISIONARY BETWEEN ZERO AND ONE).

It is planned to have the commemorative coin minted in brilliant uncirculated and mint gloss quality at the Karlsruhe mint of the State Mints of Baden-Württemberg (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg) and to issue it in June 2010 together with a commemorative stamp on the same theme.

  • 300 Years of Porcelain Production in Germany

The coin was designed by the artist Ulrich Böhme from Stuttgart. The artist takes a refreshing and unconventional look at the subject of porcelain. A smashed plate is depicted, embodying part of the essence of porcelain: Its fragility. The image side takes on a monumental aura thanks to the very large size of the plate. The word “Porzellan” (porcelain), highlighted by the use of a different, flowing font in the circumscription, reflects the fine relief of the plate.

The use of mint gloss quality on the base area of the image side enhances the contrast with the fragments of the plate as well as the lettering, Despite the low relief height of the coin, the segments of the plate appear very physical. Like the image side, the eagle on the value side is harmoniously centered. The relief design of its body details reflects porcelain-like finesse. The addition of strict ornamental structures makes the traditional symbol of German sovereignty particularly vivid. The font used is convincingly professional.

The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription:
“ZAUBER DER ZERBRECHLICHKEIT” (THE CHARM OF FRAGILITY)
It is planned to have the commemorative coin minted in brilliant uncirculated and mint gloss quality by the State Mints of Baden-Württemberg (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg) and to issue it in July 2010 together with a commemorative stamp on the same theme.

The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit” (Unity and Justice and Freedom).

It also depicts distinctive motifs of railway transport, such as a bridge, station roof and a points signal. The italic number “175” symbolizes the dynamic of a traditional yet very modern means of transport.
