10 euro silver commemorative coins 2008

In 2008, five Sterling silver (925/1000) 10 euro commemorative coins will be issued.

  • 200th Birthday of Carl Spitzweg

The image side depicts an extract from Spitzweg’s most famous painting – “The Poor Poet”. The central scene is delicately and vividly presented: Under a leaky roof, protected by an open umbrella, the poet is lying on his bed. Surrounded by books, he is “forging” his work, scanning verses.

The value side corresponds convincingly with the image side. Its statement is reinforced here by the eagle standing as if on a stage, as dignified as it is original. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2008 and the mint mark “D” for the Bavarian State Mint in Munich (Bayerisches Hauptmünzamt München).

  • GM 150th birthday of Max Planck

The image side is a successful combination of portrait and scientific graph. The artistically impressive portrait portrays Planck’s personality by expressing his thoughtfulness.

The curves shown are characteristic of thermal radiation, which was a main focus of Planck’s scientific research work.

The value side corresponds harmoniously with the image side. The simple illustration of the eagle and the lettering contribute to the coherence of the overall design. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2008 and the mint mark “F” (State Mints of Baden-Württemberg (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg), Stuttgart mint).

  • 125th Birthday of Franz Kafka

The image side is split vertically into two parts: The right-hand side depicts a portrait of Kafka on top of a body of text. His facial features protrude out of the text and confront the observer.

This ambiguity successfully broaches the issue of the tense relationship between the author and his texts, which was so important for Kafka.

The left-hand side of the coin field depicts St. Vitus Cathedral, not only as a landmark of Prague and to indicate the setting for Kafka’s “The Trial”, but also to indicate the historical-cultural background to Kafka’s life story. His biography reveals traces of bourgeois/Jewish emancipation in the late 19th century against the backdrop of a Catholic, Habsburg world that was becoming liberalized.

The well-designed value side corresponds with the image side – vertical division into two unequal areas. The ambivalence of the value side is also picked up in the unusual, lively form of the eagle. The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2008 and the mint mark “G” (State Mints of Baden-Württemberg (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg), Karlsruhe mint).

Issue limit: 260,000 (mint gloss condition), 1,500,000 (standard coinage)
    Issue date: July 10, 2008
Mint: State Mints of Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe (Staatliche Münzen Baden-Württemberg, Karlsruhe)

  • Sail training schooner Gorch Fock II

The image side depicts the specific features of the sail training schooner Gorch Fock. The image motif is surrounded by the circumscription “50 Jahre Gorch Fock” (50 Years of Gorch Fock). The bottom half of the coin features and original reflection of the contours of the ship. Seen from a distance, the text field looks like a shadow. On closer inspection, the observer discovers technical information and the date of the launch.

The value side features an eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2008 and the mint mark “J” (Hamburg Mint (Hamburgische Münze)).

Issue limit: 260,000 (mint gloss condition), 1,500,000 (standard coinage)

  • Nebra sky disk

On the image side, the Nebra sky disk is shown in both a realistic and stylized form. The astronomical content of the sky disk is shown in an artistic interpretation: The significant image element of the Pleiades is shown in its correct astronomical position in the form of stars, which correspond to the European stars on the value side.

The value side features an expressive and powerful eagle, the lettering “BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND” (FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY), the twelve stars of Europe, the denomination with euro designation as well as the year 2008 and the mint mark “A” (Berlin State Mint (Staatliche Münze Berlin)).
