  • Sleeping Beauty from the Grimm’s Fairy Tales series

“Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series – Sleeping Beauty

The “Sleeping Beauty” 10 euro collector coin was issued in 2015, as part of the “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series, which has been running since 2012. The coin series will continue until 2017.

The designer presented a balanced sculptural design, which reflects the events through its empathetic contrast of the attributes of the fairy tale. It depicts one of the most iconic scenes from “Sleeping Beauty” without resorting to an exaggerated historicized portrayal. The sleeping female figure at the center of the coin is pleasantly framed by a cleverly selected font and floral decoration, underpinned by sensibility and naturalness. The eagle on the value side is a mark of sovereignty equal to the image side, with a sculptural and graceful design similar to that of the figure on the image side, and exuding dignity. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “EIN HUNDERTJÄHRIGER TIEFER SCHLAF” (A HUNDRED YEARS OF DEEP SLEEP).

  • 200th Birthday of Otto von Bismarck

200th Birthday of Otto von Bismarck

A German politician and statesman, who embodied the ambivalence of tradition and modernity like barely any other personality of his time.

The design invites the observer to contemplate this statesman and offers interpretive leeway. The full face view is delicately constructed. The circumscription creates a harmonious formal parenthesis between the image side and the value side. Visually, the dignified German national emblem is supported by a basis formed by the stars that symbolize Europe. The image side depicts a portrait, which clearly illustrates the complexity of Bismarck’s personality. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “DIE POLITIK IST DIE LEHRE VOM MÖGLICHEN” (POLITICS IS THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE).

  • 150 Years of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service

150 Years of the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service

A long, eventful and moving history of a service whose rescuers are always ready to leap into action when people are in danger on the North Sea and Baltic Sea.

On the image side, the Hanseatic cross and a lifeboat merge into one unit, which, slightly cropped in the coin field, becomes a severe, almost abstract form. Yet the key symbols of the rescue – the lifeboat and the Hanseatic cross – remain clearly identifiable. The positioning and cropping of the symbol as well as the circumscription, which is offset to the side, are a subtle nod to the sea. The dignified and traditionally designed eagle, with its clarity and tradition, combines perfectly with the composition of the image side and the subject of sea rescue. The image side depicts the key symbols of rescue, lifeboat and Hanseatic cross, blended into one unit. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “FREIWILLIG – UNABHÄNGIG – SPENDENFINANZIERT” (VOLUNTARY – INDEPENDENT – FINANCED BY DONATIONS).

  • 1000 Years of Leipzig

    1000 Years of Leipzig

This coin marks the 1000th anniversary of the first mentioning of Leipzig, a city of civic involvement and peaceful revolution as well as a center for economy, science and culture in Germany.

The high-quality artistic design of the overall composition is impressive. The integration of the group of people into the Leipzig architecture points to the particular importance of the citizens in the history of Leipzig. The sans serif font of the typography blends very appropriately into the overall image. It forms a stabilizing basis for the pictorial representation. The image and value sides correspond with each other harmoniously both visually and typographically. The reserved illustration of the dignified eagle emphasizes the effortlessness of the coin’s image side. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “BÜRGERSINN – BÜRGERFLEISS – BÜRGERSTOLZ” (PUBLIC SPIRIT – CIVIC INDUSTRY – CIVIC PRIDE)

  • 500th Birthday of Lucas Cranach the Younger

500th Birthday of Lucas Cranach the Younger

Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586) followed in his father’s footsteps, leading the workshop in Wittenberg and far beyond. Cranach’s paintings had a decisive effect on the Reformation and its medial distribution.

Works from this workshop can be identified by the Cranach serpent, which was its much-used signature. The winged serpent represents the continuity and productivity of the Cranach workshop. The award-winning coin design is characterized by a sovereign implementation of the chosen motif in the circle. The modern font, which names the honored artist along with his dates of birth and death, is well suited to the serpent in fine relief. The harmonious design of the front and back meets all the requirements of a dignified commemorative coin of the Federal Republic of Germany ahead of the big Reformation anniversary in 2017. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “DEM FUERTREFFLICHEN MALER” (THE EXCELLENT ARTIST).
