In the “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series, which has been running since 2012, the “Hansel and Gretel” 10 euro collector coin was issued in 2014. The coin series will continue until 2017.
The clear recognizability of the subject in the winning design is impressive. It depicts the main scene, in which the witch surprises the children. The witch’s house is indicated by a dropped, nibbled gingerbread brick. Temptation and fright are reflected impressively in the facial expressions and gestures. The stringent composition of this design, with a traditional choice of motif, is impressive. The image and value sides are in excellent harmony with each other. The illustration of the eagle is appropriate to the dignity of a national emblem. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “KNUPER, KNUPER, KNEISCHEN...” (NIBBLE, NIBBLE LITTLE MOUSE...).Issue limit: 195,000 coins Issue date: February 6, 2014 Mint: Karlsruhe

250th Birthday of Johann Gottfried Schadow
The talented sculptor and graphic artist (*1764, Berlin; †1850, Berlin) is one of the leading masters of classical sculpture in Germany and the founding father of the Berlin Sculpture School.
One of his main works is the Quadriga with the goddess of victory “Victoria” on the Brandenburg Gate.
The coin impresses due to the high quality design, which reflects the key artistic achievements of Schadow. The composition is implemented with great skill. Its very delicate modeling is captivating. The portrait appears very expressive. The inclusion of a significant part of the frieze, which Schadow created in 1800 for the Berlin Mint, is particularly charming. The composition of the image and value sides is particularly harmonious. The illustration of the eagle is dignified. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “LUST HABEN WIR KÜNSTLER NUR ZU UNSERER ARBEIT” (WE ARTISTS ARE INTERESTED ONLY IN OUR WORK).Issue limit: 195,000 coins Issue date: May 8, 2014 Mint: Berlin

150th Birthday of Richard Strauss
The co-founder (*1864, Munich; †1949, Garmisch-Partenkirchen) of the Salzburg Festival was one of the greatest opera composers of the 20th century. His musical legacy includes around 200 songs and 16 operas, including his most famous opera “Salome”, the tragedy “Electra” and his comedy “The Knight of the Rose”.
The artist’s portrait is one of the most famous pictures of Strauss and shows him in middle age. The portrait has a high recognition value. The reduction to the good sculptural design of the head is seen as a positive feature. The extraordinary attention to detail and sensitive presentation of the relief illustration are impressive. The circumscription enhances the image side without restricting the motif. The prism-shaped font deserves particular mention, as it reinforces the vivid effect. Overall, the composition is timeless and balanced. The eagle is a harmonious, stylistic complement to the image side and is positioned in a classically dignified pose. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “TON UND WORT SIND BRUDER UND SCHWESTER” (SOUNDS AND WORDS ARE BROTHERS AND SISTERS).Issue limit: 185,000 coins Issue date: June 5, 2014 Mint: Munich

600th Anniversary of the Council of Constance
In 1378, three Popes ruled the Catholic Church at the same time: Gregory XII, Benedict XII and John XXIII. To end the prolonged schism, the German King Sigismund of Luxemburg invoked the Council of Constance in 1414. By deposing the popes and electing a new one, the unity of the Catholic Church was restored.
The prize-winning design impresses through its modern and clear composition. The image depicts key facets of the Council in the narrative imagery of the Chronicle by Richental. The design focuses on the many years of dispute by the delegations involved. Starting with the problem of the schism – illustrated by three tiaras – the four-year journey to a decision within the Council is clearly illustrated. The artistic design is vivid and noticeably scant. Strong imagery is produced through the use of contours. In four motifs, separated from each other by lines, we find symbolic illustrations of the main actors involved in the Council. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “PRO UNIONE AC REFORMATIONE ECCLESIAE” (Note: The lettering means “For the unity and reformation of the church”. It is an abbreviated quotation from the introduction to two decrees adopted by the Council.)Issue limit: 185,000 coins Issue date: July 3, 2014 Mint: Stuttgart

300 Years of the Fahrenheit Scale
The thermometer scale named after the German physicist and instrument maker Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit (*1686, Danzig; †1736, The Hague) celebrates its 300th anniversary this year. In 1714, Fahrenheit developed the first reliable thermometer with a mercury filling. In the USA, this temperature unit is still used to this day.
The design tackles the subject of the anniversary in a convincing manner both in terms of content and design, and stands out due to the placement of the Fahrenheit scale in the chronological sequence of thermometer scales from the 18th and 19th centuries, in line with the history of science. This design succeeds due to the composition of illustrations of a Fahrenheit thermometer in the context of other more abstract temperature scales. The jury was impressed by how well the artist had been able to convey the facets of this scientific subject in the coin field. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “EIN MEILENSTEIN DER MESSTECHNIK” (A MILESTONE IN MEASURING TECHNOLOGY).Issue limit: 185,000 coins Issue date: November 6, 2014 Mint: Hamburg
