  • “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series – Snow White

“Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series – Snow White

In the “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” series, which has been running since 2012, the “Snow White” 10 euro commemorative coin was issued in 2013. The coin series will continue until 2017.

The design depicts the main theme of the fairy tale, the beauty competition and the Queen’s jealousy of the princess, without falling into clichés, and also leaves room for individual interpretations. The fairy tale is clearly identifiable through the use of the popular mirror, apple and dwarf elements. The composition of the individual image elements in the artistic design is clear and the differentiated vividness of the relief is impressive. The recurring outline of the mirror frame in the eagle establishes a link between the image and value sides. Overall, the design is fresh and unconventional and impressed the jury most overall. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: “SPIEGLEIN, SPIEGLEIN AN DER WAND...” (MIRROR, MIRROR, ON THE WALL...).

  • 150 Years of the Red Cross

    50 Years of Deutsche Welthungerhilfe

This humanitarian aid agency was established in 1863 at the initiative of the Swiss merchant and later Nobel Prize Winner Henry Dunant (1828–1910). In the same year, the first national Red Cross agency was founded in Baden-Württemberg in the form of the Württembergische Sanitätsverein.

The work is very reflective of the variety of tasks performed by the Red Cross as a national aid agency and umbrella association for free social welfare – both nationally and internationally. It names the globally recognized principles of the Red Cross movement and encourages the observer to reflect on the basic values of human coexistence. The figurative illustration depicts example fields of action of the Red Cross, from rescue services to social commitment. The cross in the center of the coin symbolizes humanity. The layout on both sides of the coin is appealing and the image side and value side fit well together. The shape of the cross gleams on both sides. The work therefore fully meets the requirements of the specification. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: AUS LIEBE ZUM MENSCHEN (OUT OF LOVE FOR MAN)

  • 200th Birthday of Richard Wagner

    200th Birthday of Richard Wagner

Born in Leipzig, Wagner studied music, worked as a conductor, choir and theater director and was Royal Saxon Court Conductor at the Dresden Opera House. As a composer, Wager revolutionized opera and implemented the concept of musical drama in it.

In the contrast between the image and value sides, the great agreement of a compositional unity is captivating. The circular lettering selected on both sides allows a clear framing of the centrally arranged image elements. The font is timeless and clear and its selection intriguing in terms of its relationship with the imagery. A expressive, finely differentiated profile view contrasts with the dignified, contemporary depiction of the eagle on the value side. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: WANDEL UND WECHSEL LIEBT, WER LEBT (CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION ARE LOVED BY THOSE WHO LIVE).

  • 200th Birthday of Georg Büchner

    200th Birthday of Georg Büchner

The poet and physician is one of the greatest representatives of the political poetry of the pre-March period (literary history period from 1815 to 1848).

The bust portrait of the playwright in “traditional German costume” expresses his liberal revolutionary attitude; the excellent depiction of the facial features also characterizes him as a critical contemporary. The inner circumscription quotes the motto of the “Hessian Messenger” – it is taken from a French political pamphlet and therefore illustrates the European dimension of his ideas of liberty. However, the classical portrait concept and the conventional character of the value side also produce a positive contextual tension with the revolutionary explosive power of Georg Büchner’s ideas. The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: ICH BIN SO JUNG UND DIE WELT IST SO ALT (I AM SO YOUNG AND THE WORLD IS SO OLD).

  • 125 Years of Electrical Power – Heinrich Hertz

125 Years of Electrical Power – Heinrich Hertz

Hertz, born in Hamburg, studied civil engineering and natural sciences, worked as a professor in Karlsruhe and Bonn – and became the pioneer of modern physics.

On the image side, the discovery of electric radiation is presented in the form of a spherical spark gap (Hertzian dipole). The field lines of the Hertzian dipole are the key element in the wave propagation proven by Hertz in the experiment. In addition, the unit of frequency (Hz), named after Hertz, as well as the researcher’s signature are successfully integrated in the design. The value side skillfully picks up on the linear structure of the image side and depicts a filigree eagle. The stars and lettering elements round off the symmetrical design harmoniously.” The smooth coin edge bears the in-set inscription: LICHT IST EINE ELEKTRISCHE ERSCHEINUNG (LIGHT IS AN ELECTRICAL PHENOMENON).
