A coin commemorates the birth of Jesus

The German Mint also honors the Christian high festival with a special feature, the “Birth of Christ” coin. The motif by the artist Adelheid Fuss from Potsdam impressed with its playful lightness and the use of numerous elements that reflect the richness of the Christmas story. Fuss deliberately designed the penetrating gaze of the Mother of God as a point of contact for the viewer. “Maria looks towards us, she looks towards the future. And the circular frame can be understood as a magnifying glass. It brings the key scene – the holy family – into focus.

Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

Candle wax, cloves, tangerines... a scent will soon be in the air again: Christmas is the big highlight at the end of the year for many Christian churches and families. Families and friends meet under the Christmas tree to give presents and meet friends to eat Christmas goose or carp together and toast with a cup of mulled wine.

Plate embossing for the first time in the Federal Republic

The “Nativity” is the first coin in a five-part series on the Christmas theme. It stands out in many ways: the plate embossing, i.e. the concave recess, creates a unique, three-dimensional look. This coinage has never existed in the Federal Republic before. However, the value side of the coin is flat, as is the case with classic examples.

The minted face value of 25 euros could only be found once before at the German Mint: on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of reunification. In contrast to other silver coins, the coin is not made of sterling silver, but rather of the purest fine silver. Their total weight is therefore 4 grams more than the 20 euro silver coins from the German Mint. The image side is concavely curved, borderless and has a crown of 0.6 to 0.8 mm.

Familiar technology from earlier times?

Plate embossing was used in the GDR from 1966. They had experience with plate embossing, having already been used on award medals in the 1950s. The GDR wanted to create a particularly attractive range of coins with this special minting technology.
Ideal as a decoration on the Christmas tree

The packaging of the “Birth of Christ” coin makes it the perfect Christmas gift – or for decoration on your own Christmas tree: the capsule is specially equipped with an eyelet. The shiny collector's item can be hung as a decoration on the Christmas tree and thus does the festive motif particularly justice.
