To mark this occasion, the German Mint is issuing the silver collector's coin “900 Years of Freiburg”, which honors the special event and immortalizes it in coin format.
The sterling silver coin was designed by Bastian Prillwitz. With his design, the artist aimed to unite the diversity of Freiburg on one coin surface. Bastian Prillwitz describes his collage as an attempt to reflect the diversity of Freiburg, without any claim to completeness. The arrangement is intended to arouse curiosity about what Freiburg has to offer or even inspire people to visit. In particular, he emphasizes his desire to present a lively image of the city through the combination of various elements from buildings, nature and culture.
The coin motif shows the Freiburg Minster, the historic department store and the Martinstor, representing a large number of historical buildings that characterize Freiburg's landscape of sights. Grapes, vineyards and the Schlossberg tower reflect the city's closeness to nature. The artist describes the Freiburg streams, which run through the entire old town, as a real specialty, so a stream with a toy boat also found a place on the coin. Finally, Freiburg's recent sustainable urban development should be expressed through the depiction of the Vauban settlement, which also represents the ecological orientation of the livable city. In the middle you can see the Freiburg citizenship in front of the city coat of arms.
The collector's coin has a face value of 20 euros and has the inscription on the edge: “THE CITIZEN IS SUPREME LAW +”.
In 1120 the “Free Castle” was founded by Konrad von Zähringen, the brother of the then ruling Duke Berthold III. von Zähringen, granted market rights.
