The new "Bundesländer II" series will once again focus on the regional specialities and sights of the respective federal states. The 2-euro commemorative coin "Hamburg" marks the start.

The motif on the picture page, which was designed by artist Michael Otto from Rodenbach, shows the striking and iconographic Elbphilharmonie concert hall, one of the most famous sights in the Hanseatic city, complemented by a stylised silhouette of buildings and harbour cranes. The jury's statement said: "The design represents the federal state of Hamburg extremely convincingly through the impressive, detailed depiction of the concert building in front of a maritime cityscape." The design of the value side was created by Luc Luycx from Belgium.

It was controversial for a long time, but has since become one of the most recognisable landmarks of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg: the Elbphilharmonie is a breathtaking synthesis of the arts consisting of unusual architecture, excellent acoustics and a unique location. The foundation stone was laid in 2007. The starting point for the concert hall is the old Kaispeicher A warehouse from 1966, which is completely gutted. 1,111 reinforced concrete piles anchor the warehouse in the Elbe. Floor by floor, the building grows in height, and in 2010 the installation of the characteristic glass façade begins. There are repeated delays and cost increases, and in 2013 the project is reorganised after construction is halted for several months. On 31 January 2014, five fitters installed the last of the 1,100 glass elements in the curved roof of the building. On 4 November 2016, the Plaza, a spacious terrace that is both a vantage point and meeting place, is opened. The grand opening of the Elbphilharmonie finally takes place on 11 January 2017 after almost ten years of construction. Since then, the concert hall has captivated not only the residents of Hamburg, but also millions of guests from all over the world.
