With more than a thousand years of history, Saxony-Anhalt offers interesting culture and a multitude of impressive sights. These range from the Harz Mountains to the famous Bauhaus Dessau, the valuable cathedral treasures and the Romanesque Route. The capital of the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, Magdeburg, has an impressive landmark that has been in existence for over 800 years: St Mauritius Cathedral. It adorns the coin of the year 2021.
The 2 euro special set includes five collector's coins from all five mints in brilliant uncirculated or mint gloss.

Backgroundinformation

The cathedral is the first cathedral building on German soil to be built entirely in the Gothic style. Since construction began in 1207, the church has been extended, restored and remodelled several times, most recently in the 1950s after it was severely damaged by Allied air raids in 1944. The cathedral is a Protestant parish church and the preaching church of the regional bishop of the Protestant Church in Central Germany. It is also the burial church of a famous ruler. Emperor Otto I the Great from the Liudolfing dynasty (Ottonians) was Duke of Saxony and King of the East Franconian Empire from 936, King of Italy from 951 and Roman Emperor from 962. He was laid to rest in a stone coffin in the choir area of the cathedral.
