The city of Karlsruhe in Baden-Württemberg is home to Germany's most important judicial institution: the Federal Constitutional Court. It is the highest independent judicial authority and acts as the guardian of the German constitution. Its decisions bind the federal and state constitutional bodies as well as all courts and authorities. Every German citizen has the opportunity to submit constitutional complaints here. The judges of the Federal Constitutional Court are well-known personalities whose term of office is 12 years. They are unmistakable by their venerable scarlet robes.

Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

Built at the end of the 18th century in the classicist style, the former city gate is now considered the most famous landmark in Berlin and, at least since the division of Germany, reflects the eventful German history like no other building. When the wall was built in August 1961, it was in a restricted area and could not be crossed from the west or the east. So it became the focal point of the Cold War - and a projection surface for the hope that this division of state might one day be overcome. Triggered by the peaceful revolution in the GDR, this wish became reality with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989.
