Description Coin

Description Coin

In this series, the German Mint dedicates itself to dynamic trend sports in which people are propelled solely by air or wind. The coin motif selected for 2020 honours beach sailing.

The coin consists of an inner copper-nickel core and an outer ring made of red bronze. In between is a translucent plastic ring, which is characteristic of the ‘Air moves’ series. The polymer ring coin is available in the minting qualities brilliant uncirculated and proof and, designed by Andre Witting, shows a so-called yacht on the image side.

Sailing was to take centre stage when selecting the motif for the coin competition. Witting's design was convincing in its depiction of the essential, an elegant and minimalist illustration of a beach yacht in a wide landscape.

Backgroundinformation

Backgroundinformation

Sailing on the beach.

A beach sailer consists of a frame, three wheels, a mast with boom, a sail and a sheet. Drivers, also known as pilots, steer the craft. The land yachts are powered exclusively by wind energy and can reach speeds of up to 80 km/h in recreational sports. Their year-round usability makes sailing on the border between water and land particularly interesting.

There are only a few places in Germany where beach sailing is possible. These include the East Frisian Islands and St. Peter-Ording on the North Sea coast. Sailing on land, for example, has a long tradition there. The St. Peter-Ording region is ideal for the sport, as the long, hard beaches are constantly changing their profile and therefore provide not only the ideal conditions but also a challenging environment.
